International Year of Astronomy 2009

The Universe - yours to discover with the Nordic telescope

An astronomy essay writing competition for Nordic highschool students

Are you a highschool student? Are you interested in astronomy? Then this is something for you. You are hereby invited to participate in a Nordic essay writing competition on an astronomical subject of your choice. The competition is arranged by The Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) Scientific Association (NOTSA) and the national Research Councils/Academies in collaboration with Nordic astronomers. The competition is part of a series of astroactivities taking place during the International Year of Astronomy 2009.

One winner from each Nordic country will be elected by national expertpanels. The winners will be invited to visit the Nordic Optical Telescope on the island La Palma during a few days in October-December 2009. In collaboration with the staff astronomers an observational programme will be planned and carried out. Other activities will also be offered during the stay on La Palma.

Rules: To write an essay on an astronomical topic. Maybe you have a dream of using a big telescope to observe a distant black hole or an exotic planet. Fine, tell us how! Perhaps you have a fantasy about cosmos you want to convey in a more lyrical format. Go ahead - let loose!

Length and format: Your essay may not be longer than 5000 words. Word or pdf format are recommended. The essay must include a cover page with your name, age, school, class, school address, home address, possible e-mail address and the title of your essay.
