Top-Calib split calibration fiber

This is the fiber that brings the light from the ThAr and halogen lamps to the small calibration arm inside the telescope-adapter plate. The fiber is protected with a silver-coloured thin shower-hose, and has blue/silver plugs.

It is important that the fiber is not touched on the side of the telescope adapter. The telephone number on the blue plug at that end should be facing down. The metal fixation plug should be well tightened to the adapter plate. To prevent rotational movement of the fiber, there is a piece of tape covering the metal fixation plug and the blue plastic part of the plug.

On the side of the lamps, the fiber can be unplugged if necessary.

How to swap a ThAr lamp in the FIES top calibration unit

Handle the lamp with care (600 euro per lamp). Wash hands before handling. Try not to touch the glass parts.

  • Switch off the lamps on the FIES sequencer: 'lampsoff'

  • Find a new Heraeus Thorium-Argon lamp in the ALFOSC optics cabinet or in the FIES cupboard in the FIES front room. Grey box, lamp type 3QAY/Th

  • Goto the dome, locate the FIES top-calib electronics box, and switch off the box on the side (at small extension box)

  • Find the plastic key to the electronics box, it is taped to the box

  • Find a cutter to cut the cable-ties that hold the silver-coloured calibration fiber. Only cut when necesary. Do not remove/unscrew the silver-coloured calibration fiber on its telescope-adapter end.

  • Gently open the box with the key, while holding the lid

  • The long tube holds the old ThAr lamp. Unscrew the long tube from the outside of the electronics box: loosen the 4 Allen-screws while carefully holding the tube. Careful: the lamp may be loose.

  • Take the lamp out of the tube, and unplug it

  • Plug-on the connector to the new lamp. Push the new lamp all the way into the tube, gently.

  • Tighten the 4 Allen screws

  • (Secure the lamp by applying heavy duty tape. Tape the connector plug to the metal tube. Do not put tape on the lamp itself.)

  • Close the electronics box

  • Apply new cable-ties to fixate the silver-coloured calibration fiber

  • Tape the plastic key to the box

  • Switch-on the electronics box with the switch on its side

  • Initialise the top-calib unit: type 'init' in the FIES sequencer. If the process stalls, then restart the obssystem and retry 'init' .

  • Put the old lamp in the box, and mark it clearly to be broken or bad. Put the box in the ALFOSC optics cabinet.

  • Test the lamp with
    setup-fibN-thar; easythar

  • Write a fault report with title "FIES lamp replaced"

  • Write JC an email instructing to change the value of the FILMPID7 header, for example
    FILMPID7= 'ThAr Hereus installed 8 Apr 2011'

How to swap a ThAr lamp in the FIES bottom calibration unit

Handle the lamp with care (600 euro per lamp). Wash hands before handling. Try not to touch the glass parts.

  • Switch off the lamps on the FIES sequencer: 'lampsoff'

  • Find a new Heraeus Thorium-Argon lamp in the ALFOSC optics cabinet or in the FIES cupboard in the FIES front room. Grey box, lamp type 3QAY/Th

  • Goto the FIES front room. Open the cabinet holding the bottom calibration unit: careful with your finger when opening it. Hold the flap-door while opening it.

  • The unit has space for 5 lamps. The ThAr lamp-holder should be marked.

  • Unplug and remove the old lamp. First, two m3 Allen screws have to be loosened, which hold the white teflon lamp holder.

  • The new lamp needs some loops of some tape around it near the base, because the holder hole is a bit larger than the lamp. Just to keep the lamp in position.

  • Put in the new lamp, and connect the cable plug.

  • Prepare for closing the flap door: make sure none of the fibers is close to the door. Then carefully close the door.

  • Put the old lamp in the box, and mark it clearly to be broken or bad. Store it in the cupboard next to the entrance door.

  • Switch off the lights of the front room and leave the building

  • Test the lamp with
    setup-fibN-thar; easythar

  • Write a fault report with title "FIES lamp replaced"

  • Write JC an email instructing to change the value of the FILMPID4 header, for example
    FILMPID4= 'ThAr Hereus installed 31 Dec 2012'

How to swap a Halogen lamp in the FIES top calibration unit

  • Find a new 35W/12V halogen lamp in the "ALFOSC optics cabinet" or in the FIES cupboard in the FIES front room.

  • Goto the dome, locate the FIES top-calib electronics box, and switch off the box on the side (at small extension box).

  • Find the plastic key to the electronics box, it is taped to the box.

  • Find a cutter to cut the cable-ties that hold the silver-coloured calibration fibre and cut all four. Do not remove/unscrew the silver-coloured calibration fibre on its telescope-adapter end.

  • Gently open the box with the key, while holding the lid.

  • Unscrew the top lamp holder from the outside of the electronics box: remove the Allen-screws while making sure the lamp holder stays in position, i.e. doesn't fall out backwards.

  • To make life easier unscrew the fibre from the holder, but
ONLY AT THE LAMP, do not touch at the other FIBER-END AT THE TELESCOPE.

  • Slide off the outer part of the lamp housing.

  • Pull the rest of the housing out about 10cm.

  • Remove the (very small) screw on the side from the lamp end and slide off the end piece which contains the lamp.

  • The bulb is just pushed in. When inserting the new bulb hold it using a lens tissus, don't touch the lamp with your bare hands.

  • Reverse to put it all back

  • Switch-on the electronics box with the switch on its side

  • Initialise the top-calib unit: type 'init' in the FIES sequencer. If the process stalls, then restart the obssystem and retry 'init' .

  • Test the lamp with
    setup-fibN-halo; easyhalo

  • Write a fault report with title "FIES lamp replaced"

  • Write JC an email instructing to change the value of the FILMPID6 header, for example
    FILMPID6= 'Halogen 35W installed 8 Apr 2011'
