Service Observing

Specifically for the extended period of service nights a basic system was developed to define sets of observations in the form of Observing Blocks (OB). Each OB consist of observations of a single object in one or more filters, and includes the requirements (e.g., weather conditions, time-critical, etc.) for the observations. For NOTCam, the observations themselves are defined in observing scripts which can be executed directly at the telescope. To define these scripts, an observing script generator was developed which is now available for all users.

For the scheduling of the observations a simple user-interface was made to select an OB on the basis of the observing conditions and the requirements defined in the OB.

The extended period of service observing also required a system for data storage for the various PIs, and a system based on 3 DDS3 DAT drives was developed and used for storing data from NOTcam and STANCAM.
