Latest Call for Proposals

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
For the Nordic Optical Telescope, the 18th allocation period runs from Oct 1, 1998, to April 1, 1999. Applications for observing time in this period are hereby invited. These applications should be issued by e-mail to not@astro.utu.fi, or in writing in twelve (12 copies) on the official application forms (upon request available from the Office of the Director) and forwarded to:

Director
Nordic Optical Telescope SA
Tuorla Observatory
Turku University
FIN-21500 Piikkio
Finland

To get the ASCII file for your e-mail application, please follow these instructions:

ftp oj287.astro.utu.fi OR ftp 130.232.73.1
User: anonymous
Password: "your e-mail address"
cd NOT
get applform.txt
quit

Do not use old versions of the application form (earlier than April -97).

We strongly recommend also that you provide the relevant information for all of the items on the form, as incomplete applications may not be considered. In particular, for proposals which require good seeing, or photometric conditions, a backup programme must be given. After having completed the application, send the file to the e-mail address: not@astro.utu.fi. You will then receive confirmation by e-mail that your application has been received.

Optionally, letters should be marked "Application for observing time". In order to be valid, applications for observing time have to be received at the Tuorla Observatory prior to:

May 1, 1998, 24h UT.

Late applications will not be considered. A telefax is not regarded as an application. It is stressed that there is no a priori limitation of the observing time allotted. Thus, also applications for longer observing programmes are welcome.

We kindly ask you to note, that service mode observations are, normally, not available. To be considered, any proposal requiring service mode observations must, prior to submittance, have been agreed with local NOT staff at La Palma.

Observing time is granted with due reservations that necessary technical work has priority. At the same time, it is our hope that, during the allocation period forthcoming, 90 percent of the time available can be used for scientific programmes. Further, it is noted that, according to our agreements, 20 percent of the observing time available is due to our Spanish colleagues. Finally, 5 percent are to be allocated by the CCI for international programmes.

For use by visiting observers, also those without previous experience of these instruments, we can, as far as can be judged today, offer the Standby CCD camera (StanCam), Cassegrain CCD camera (HiRAC), and the UBVRI photopolarimeter (TurPol). Further, we hope to be able to offer under similar conditions the SOFIN high resolution spectrograph, and the ALFOSC low-resolution spectrograph/focal reducer (is made available at the NOT according to an agreement signed with Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia).

Information on the telescope and the instruments can be found through the NOT Web pages http://www.not.iac.es/, or http://astro.utu.fi/, or http://www.astro.lu.se/, and in the first nine issues of the NOT NEWS. Further articles on the telescope are quoted in the NOT NEWS. The NOT User Manual and manuals for several auxiliary instruments are available via Web, and anonymous FTP from ftp.not.iac.es.

A CD-ROM writer (650 MB) has been installed at the NOT in March 1997 for data archiving, and disks are available for the storage and transport of data.

Applications will be reviewed by the NOT Observing Programmes Committee. As soon as possible, applicants will be informed regarding allocation of observing time. For Nordic observers, funds for economic travel (charter or equivalent) and lodging can be obtained from national research authorities. Please refer to national representatives for further information. Grants from the IAC (contact: jburgos@ll.iac.es) have also been made available to cover the accommodation and subsistence at the Observatory on La Palma and part of the travel costs for one observer per run.

Tuorla Observatory, March 26, 1998
