NOT follow-up of gravitational wave sources from Advanced LIGO-VIRGO
(PI Pian)
Gravitational waves from cosmic explosions or astrophysical transients may
soon be detected by the joint search of advanced LIGO and VIRGO
interferometers. We would like to take spectra with ALFOSC of any optical
counterpart of a gravitational radiation source, as localized with
arc-second precision by any observatory world-wide or by imaging cameras on
the NOT itself, to identify its nature and measure its distance, and
follow-up imaging at several epochs (depending on flux level) in optical
with ALFOSC, or StanCAM, or MOSCA. Favourite counterpart candidates are the
coalescing binary systems of degenerate stars, although our follow-up will
be unbiased with respect to source nature and origin.
Observations
The PI will send the target and observing information
when this ToO is triggered.
